Laser Raman Spectroscopy for Detecting Biomarkers in Antartica and on Mars. The researchers propose to use fibre optic probes to penetrate beneath the zone of oxidised Martian regolith, and to remotely conduct laser Raman spectroscopy to characterise biomolecules in various sedimentary profiles. The team is already accumulating a Raman spectra database of cyanobacterial communities from Antartic lithic habitats as an analogue for former microbial life on early Mars.
